What is HFRT?
- Heart failure reversal therapy (HFRT) is scientifically researched integration of Ayurveda and modern medical science. It is specially designed to enhance the condition of your heart and lungs (your cardio respiratory fitness).
- HFRT is a combination of the best of the modern diagnostics, ayurvedic panchakarma therapies, diet & exercise physiotherapy.
- It uses techniques described in panchakarma namely Snehana (massage), Swedana (fomentation therapy) and Basti (type of enema) along with Hrudayadhara (thoracic dripping therapy).
What is Heart failure?
- Heart failure is a condition in which your heart can’t pump blood well enough to meet your body’s needs all the time.
- It can develop gradually (chronic), or it may start suddenly (acute).
- Heart failure can develop suddenly, for instance after a heart attack or due to certain heart rhythm problems. This is known as acute heart failure. It should be considered a medical emergency requiring immediate intervention
- But it usually develops gradually over time as a result of a different medical problem, such as persistent high blood pressure, high blood sugar levels, obesity, heart blockages etc. This is known as chronic heart failure.
What conditions HFRT can treat?
- Heart failure patients with reduced ejection fraction (pumping capacity)
- Heart failure patients with normal ejection fraction (pumping capacity)
- Heart failure patients with difficulty in breathing on Exertion
- Heart failure patients with swelling over both legs.
- Heart failure with valvular heart disease (mitral stenosis/aortic stenosis)
- Congenital heart disease with difficulty in breathing on Exertion.
How does HFRT therapy works?
- It helps to improve the strength of your heart muscles, thereby improves pumping capacity of your heart.
- It improves the elasticity of the blood vessels, thereby improves the pumping capacity of your heart and blood circulation throughout the body.
- It helps to improve your VO2 max value (the amount or volume of oxygen the body uses when you exercise as hard as you can), thereby improving your cardio respiratory fitness.
- It helps to reduce the stress put on your heart muscles (cardiac workload) by eliminating metabolic wastes, excess of salt and water out of the body.
Who is eligible for HFRT therapy?
- CHF patients having normal or reduced ejection fraction
- CHF Patients having difficulty in breathing on exertion/ swelling over both legs.
- DM/HTN/Obese patients having difficulty in breathing on exertion/swelling over both legs.
- Valvular heart disease (Mitral stenosis/aortic stenosis) patient having difficulty in breathing on exertion.
- Congenital heart disease patient having difficulty in breathing on exertion / swelling over both legs.
Who should not undergo HFRT therapy?
- Patients having difficulty in breathing at rest
- Blood clot (thrombus) in the left ventricle of the heart
- Acute ongoing Heart attack
- Acute infection
- Acute arrythmia
Is HFRT a common therapy?
- HFRT is an evidence-based, specially designed treatment which will help you to not only heal your condition, but will also strengthen your heart and improve your quality of life.

- This non-invasive treatment of Madhavbaug will help to treat complex heart conditions at different stages of the disease.
What happens before HFRT therapy?
- Before initiating HFRT therapy, doctor will take your detail medical history and will assess for the presence of comorbidities.
- Your baseline clinical status will be determined by measuring your blood pressure, weight, BMI, Abdominal Girth, lipid profile, HbA1c, ECG, ejection fraction (as measured by 2D Echo) and VO2 Max (measured by 6 MWT/Stress test).
- Accordingly, doctor will recommend you the HFRT treatment plan, diet kit/diet charts.
What happens during HFRT therapy?
- Depending upon the investigations and clinical findings, doctor will recommend you the HFRT plan.
- Diet kit will be started according to the guidelines given or you will be provided with diet charts. Dietician will also call you and take the dietary recall.
- You will have cardio exercise session in the clinic and during every session doctor will take out your ECG before and after the exercise session, to assess improvement in your exercise tolerance.
- Doctor will consult you and check your medicines. Depending upon your health improvement and parameters (like VO2max, EF, weight, BMI, abdominal girth) he will taper down your allopathy medicines.
- At the same time, he will guide you about mib PULSE application; how to use it, how to enter the values, photos of your plate, how to do exercises and listen to meditation audios by using mib PULSE app, because depending upon those values doctor will decide when to taper or stop your allopathy medicines.
- In clinic set up, you will be administered panchakarma therapies, twice weekly with each sitting lasting up to 65-70 mins. While in case of Hospital set up, you will be administered HFRT (60-75 minutes) with minimum 7 sittings over 7 days.
How will I feel after HFRT therapy?
- As panchakarma treatment used in HFRT therapy helps to remove excess of sodium, after and metabolic wastes out of the body, your symptoms like difficulty in breathing on exertion and swelling over both legs will reduce down, your heart rate and blood pressure values will get normalized and you will start recovering from your disease condition.
- If you are diabetic and on diet kit, your HbA1C values will get normalized.
- The snehan-swedana therapy (oil massage & fomentation therapy), will also help to reduce symptoms of body stiffness, muscle pain etc.
How long does HFRT therapy last?
- After careful examination and investigation doctor will suggest a suitable HFRT plan.
- In clinic set up, your treating doctor might advise you 30, 60 or 90days care plan followed by 12 months follow up program.
- While in hospital set up, minimum 7 sittings over 7 days will be administered. Variables will be compared between day 1, 7, 30, 60 and day 90 of HFRT.
Can I have HFRT therapy more than once?
- Generally not required, but if your treating doctor find it necessary, he might advice for more HFRT treatment.
- It totally depends upon severity of symptoms and values of the parameters assessed during your follow up.
What are the advantages of HFRT?
- It helps to improve your VO2 max value (the amount or volume of oxygen the body uses when you exercise as hard as you can), thereby improving your cardio respiratory fitness.
- Depending upon the improvement in parameters or symptoms, dose of allopathy medicines can be tapered down or stopped completely and side effects associated with the use of those allopathy medicines can be prevented.
- It helps to reduce the stress put on your heart muscles (cardiac workload) by eliminating metabolic wastes, excess of salt and water out of the body.

When should I see my doctor after HFRT?
- You should follow up with your treating doctor after one month. Because, in one month time period most of your symptoms will get alleviated and accordingly he can suggest the modification of existing allopathy medicines.
