Thyroid problems like hypothyroidism may cause fatigue, weight gain, constipation, dry skin, changes in hair or difficulty concentrating. Occasionally, there is an abnormal thyroid report even when the symptoms are mild or absent.

This is why people looking for thyroid treatment in Ayurveda should not concentrate only on finding a particular herb or home remedy.

It is more helpful to understand the thyroid condition, review the relevant blood tests and medicines, and then assess how diet, digestion, weight, sleep, physical activity, and other health factors may contribute to the person’s overall wellbeing.

What Is Hypothyroidism?

Hypothyroidism is a condition where the thyroid gland doesn’t produce enough thyroid hormones for the body to use. These hormones affect a number of body functions, including metabolism, energy utilisation and temperature regulation.

Common hypothyroidism symptoms may include:

But you can’t diagnose hypothyroidism based on symptoms alone.

Diagnosis and monitoring require blood tests that measure thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) and thyroid hormone, as well as a person’s medical history.

This assessment is important when you are seeking treatment for hypothyroidism in Ayurveda. The ayurvedic assessment, like the prakriti assessment when done with the investigation and blood tests, can give an added advantage to understand the overall health of the person.

Experiencing thyroid symptoms or already diagnosed with hypothyroidism?

How Does Ayurveda Look at Thyroid Health?

Ayurveda does not use the same diagnostic framework for thyroid disorders as modern endocrinology.

An Ayurvedic physician may evaluate the person’s medical history as well as Prakriti, Vikriti, Agni, digestion, diet, sleep, activity, stress and other symptoms.

The aim is to understand the factors affecting each person’s health, rather than assuming everyone with hypothyroidism has the same pattern

A practical integrated assessment may therefore consider modern clinical parameters as well as ayurvedic parameters:

Modern Clinical ParametersAyurvedic Parameters
TSH and thyroid hormone levels Existing thyroid diagnosis Current medicines Weight and BMI Blood glucose and lipid profile where relevant Associated health conditionsPrakriti and Vikriti Digestive pattern Appetite and bowel habits Sleep quality Physical activity Dietary habits Stress and daily routine

This is especially true when hypothyroidism is diagnosed alongside weight gain, diabetes, high cholesterol or other metabolic issues.

What Is Thyroid Treatment in Ayurveda?

Ayurvedic treatment for hypothyroidism may include personalised dietary advice, lifestyle modification, ayurvedic medicines and selected therapies depending on the person’s clinical and ayurvedic assessment.

Research found that adults with primary hypothyroidism, when treated with the Ayurveda protocol with Kanchanara Guggulu over 60 days, showed greater improvements in TSH, weight, body-fat measures, clinical hypothyroidism scores and quality of life (Vivek et al., 2025).

Can Ayurveda Help Manage Hypothyroidism?

Ayurveda can support the management of hypothyroidism through a personalised approach that combines Ayurvedic medicines, diet, lifestyle changes and appropriate clinical monitoring. The treatment is planned according to the person’s symptoms, thyroid status, Prakriti, Vikriti, digestion, metabolism and overall health.

The goal of thyroid treatment in Ayurveda is not to follow the same protocol for every patient. Instead, the approach considers why the person is experiencing symptoms such as weight gain, fatigue, constipation, low energy or changes in metabolism, and how these may relate to their overall health.

“In thyroid care, every patient may present differently. Looking at the thyroid parameters along with Prakriti, Vikriti, digestion, diet, lifestyle and associated metabolic concerns helps us understand the person more completely and plan care accordingly.”

– Dr. Bipin Gond, Zonal Medical Head, Madhavbaug

Clinical research discovered that patients with subclinical hypothyroidism, when given 600 mg of ashwagandha root extract taken daily for eight weeks, significantly improved TSH, T3 and T4 levels compared with placebo (Sharma, Basu and Singh, 2018).

These findings support the growing clinical interest in Ayurveda for thyroid health. Since hypothyroidism can vary considerably from one person to another, Ayurvedic care is best planned after assessing the individual’s thyroid reports, existing medicines, diet, digestion, lifestyle and associated metabolic concerns.

Ayurveda for Thyroid and Diet

Diet is a key part of an Ayurvedic approach to thyroid health, particularly if hypothyroidism is linked to weight gain, poor digestion, or other metabolic issues. There is no specific “thyroid diet” advised by Ayurveda but it suggests that foods should be selected based on the condition of health, digestion, lifestyle and nutritional needs of the individual.

A balanced diet for someone with hypothyroidism may include:

  • Adequate protein from suitable sources
  • Vegetables and seasonal fruits
  • Whole grains and pulses in appropriate portions
  • Nuts and seeds
  • Fibre-rich foods
  • Sufficient water
  • Minimally processed foods

The way food is prepared and the overall dietary pattern also matter. Frequent consumption of sugary beverages, deep-fried foods, highly processed foods and calorie-dense snacks can make weight management more difficult, particularly when hypothyroidism is accompanied by metabolic concerns.

At the same time, there is no need to follow restrictive or extreme “thyroid diets” promoted online unless there is a specific clinical or nutritional reason. The focus should be on a sustainable eating pattern that supports overall health.

Hypothyroidism Diet and Iodine

Iodine is essential for the production of thyroid hormones, but increasing iodine intake does not automatically improve thyroid function. Both inadequate and excessive iodine intake can affect thyroid health.

That’s why you shouldn’t just start taking iodine supplements because you have hypothyroidism. The need for iodine and other nutrients should be discussed in the light of his/her thyroid condition, diet and overall health.

This way an Ayurvedic diet plan can be customised to the individual as opposed to a list of foods which are considered “good” or “bad” for the thyroid universally.

Ayurvedic Medicines for Hypothyroidism

Several Ayurvedic medicines and formulations have been clinically studied for hypothyroidism, with Ashwagandha, Pippali and formulations such as Triphaladya Guggulu being among the researched options. Their potential role in thyroid care is being explored through clinical studies, particularly in relation to thyroid hormone levels, symptoms and overall metabolic health.

Different medicines have been studied in different patient groups and with different treatment regimens. This is the reason why an Ayurvedic medicine must be chosen based on individual assessment and not by using the same herb for everybody, which is why choosing the right Ayurvedic doctor matters, along with a full health assessment beforehand.

Ashwagandha

Ashwagandha has been studied for its potential role in supporting thyroid function, particularly in people with subclinical hypothyroidism.

In one study, 50 patients with subclinical hypothyroidism were given 600 mg of ashwagandha root extract per day for 8 weeks. The study showed significant improvement in TSH, T3 and T4 levels. (Sharma, Basu and Singh, 2018).

These findings have contributed to clinical interest in Ayurveda for thyroid health, particularly where thyroid function is being assessed alongside the person’s broader health and lifestyle.

Pippali

Pippali has also been investigated as part of Ayurvedic management for primary hypothyroidism.

Research was conducted in 40 patients with primary hypothyroidism, using Pippali in two different dosing regimens and assessing TSH, T3, T4, and clinical symptoms. The researchers reported changes in thyroid-related measures during the study. (Shah et al., 2022).

This research adds to the growing clinical literature on Ayurvedic treatment for hypothyroidism and highlights the need for study of Ayurvedic medicines through structured clinical evaluation.

Triphaladya Guggulu and Punarnavadi Kashaya

Ayurvedic formulations have also been studied for their role in managing hypothyroidism and its associated symptoms.

An earlier clinical study involving 15 patients evaluated Triphaladya Guggulu along with Punarnavadi Kashaya over 45 days. The study reported improvements in several subjective symptoms. (Singh and Thakar, 2018).

These studies show that Ayurvedic medicines and formulations are being clinically investigated for thyroid disorders. At the same time, the treatment should be selected according to the individual’s thyroid status, symptoms, Prakriti, Vikriti, diet, digestion and other health factors rather than choosing an herb solely because it is associated with thyroid health.

Lifestyle Changes That Support Thyroid Health

Lifestyle changes can support thyroid health, particularly when hypothyroidism is accompanied by obesity, fatigue, poor sleep or other metabolic concerns. Adequate sleep, regular physical activity, stress management and healthy weight management can also support overall wellbeing, along with appropriate thyroid treatment.

Stay Physically Active

Regular physical activity helps people with hypothyroidism to maintain weight, cardiovascular fitness and muscle health. The type and intensity of exercise that is best for an individual depends on their age, fitness level, symptoms, and overall medical condition.

In this case, if the fatigue or muscle weakness is substantial, a gradual approach and increasing activity as tolerated may be a better option than an intense exercise regimen.

Get Adequate Sleep

Sleep quality is an important part of energy, appetite and metabolic health management. Poor or irregular sleep can make fatigue and weight management problems even more difficult.

Better sleep habits can be developed by maintaining a regular sleep and wake time, reducing exposure to screens at night and having a comfortable sleep routine.

Manage Stress

Stress management can improve overall wellbeing, making it easier to keep up healthy sleep, eating and activity habits. Stress in itself doesn’t mean thyroid symptoms are psychological, but long-term stress can affect sleep, appetite and daily routines.

Depending on the individual’s preference and health condition, it may include yoga, breathing exercises and meditation as relaxation practices.

Monitor Weight and Metabolic Health

If you are managing your weight, particularly when hypothyroidism occurs along with insulin resistance, diabetes, high cholesterol, or other metabolic concerns.

Thyroid hormone levels are not always the cause of weight changes. Diet, physical activity, sleep, medications, and other metabolic factors can also affect body weight.

Therefore, a person experiencing weight gain despite thyroid treatment may benefit from looking at the complete metabolic picture rather than focusing only on the thyroid report. A personalised assessment can help identify which dietary and lifestyle changes may be appropriate alongside ongoing thyroid care.

Clinical Insight

“When we evaluate a patient with hypothyroidism, we don’t look at the thyroid report in isolation. Weight, digestion, food habits, sleep, physical activity, stress and related metabolic conditions can impact the overall health of the person. So the Ayurvedic approach should be individualised and monitored and not be based on one medicine or one symptom.”

This is especially important when hypothyroidism is linked to weight gain, diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol or other metabolic concerns.

The goal is to understand how the thyroid condition fits into the person’s wider health picture and to provide supervised, individualised care that addresses thyroid health alongside the factors that may be affecting overall wellbeing.

If you are looking for a personalised Ayurvedic approach to thyroid management, a health assessment at your nearest Madhavbaug clinic or hosiptal can help determine the right course of care based on your thyroid status, symptoms, lifestyle and overall health.
