A normal HbA1c level is generally below 5.7%. A result between 5.7% and 6.4% is considered the prediabetes range, while 6.5% or above falls in the diabetes range when appropriately confirmed. These ranges give you a quick idea of where your average blood sugar stands over the past 2 to 3 months.

If you have recently received your HbA1c report, you may be looking at the number and wondering, “Is this normal for me?” You may also be unsure whether a slightly higher result means prediabetes or diabetes. Your other blood sugar readings, health conditions and overall health can also affect how your result is interpreted. Knowing your HbA1c level is a useful first step when discussing your report with your doctor.

What Is the Normal HbA1c Level?

A normal HbA1c level is generally below 5.7%. A result from 5.7% to 6.4% falls in the prediabetes range, while 6.5% or above falls in the diabetes range when appropriately confirmed.

HbA1c levelWhat it generally indicates
Below 5.7%Normal range
5.7% to 6.4%Prediabetes range
6.5% or aboveDiabetes range

If you are looking at your own HbA1c report, these ranges give you a simple starting point. Your doctor may also consider your symptoms, other blood sugar readings and overall health before deciding what your result means for you. This is why knowing what an HbA1c test measures can be helpful when you are trying to understand a number on your report.

Research in South Asian populations has also used these HbA1c categories to identify normal blood sugar, prediabetes and diabetes (Rao et al., 2015). However, you may still wonder whether the same HbA1c range applies at every age. Let’s look at the HbA1c normal range by age and what the available evidence tells us.

HbA1c Normal Range Chart by Age

Your HbA1c level may rise slightly as you get older. This can happen even when your blood sugar is in the normal range. So if you are checking your HbA1c report after the age of 50 or 60, your age is one of the things your doctor may consider.

An Indian study found that the average HbA1c was about 5.16% in people aged 20 to 29 years. It was about 5.49% in people aged 70 years and above among those with normal glucose levels (Deepa et al., 2022).

Age groupAverage HbA1c in the study
20–29 years5.16%
30–39 yearsGradual increase
40–49 yearsGradual increase
50–59 yearsGradual increase
60–69 yearsGradual increase
70 years and above5.49%

These numbers give you an idea of how HbA1c can change with age. They are study averages. They are not separate normal limits for each age group. Your own result should be checked along with your blood sugar readings and overall health.

If your HbA1c is above the normal range, the next step is to see whether it falls into the HbA1c prediabetes range and what that result could mean for you.

“I always remind patients that an HbA1c result should be looked at in context. A number slightly above the usual range does not tell us everything about a person’s health. We look at their blood sugar readings, age, weight and other health factors before deciding what the result means and what needs attention.”

What Is the HbA1c Prediabetes Range?

An HbA1c level between 5.7% and 6.4% is generally considered the prediabetes range. It means your average blood sugar has been higher than normal over the past few months, but it has not reached the usual diabetes range.

If your report shows a number in this range, it does not mean that you have diabetes. It is a sign that your blood sugar may be starting to rise. Your doctor may look at your weight, waist size, food habits, physical activity and other blood sugar readings to see what may be affecting your result.

A long-term study of Asian Indian adults in Chennai found that higher HbA1c levels were linked with a greater chance of progressing to prediabetes or diabetes during follow-up (Anjana et al., 2015).

If your HbA1c is between 5.7% and 6.4%, take it as a reason to pay closer attention to your blood sugar. Your doctor may suggest another prediabetes test and look at your other health factors before deciding what the result means for you. When the HbA1c reaches 6.5% or above, it falls into the diabetes range, so the next step is to understand what that level means.

What Is the HbA1c Diabetes Range?

An HbA1c level of 6.5% or above is generally considered to be in the diabetes range when the test is done properly and the result is confirmed when needed.

If your report shows 6.5% or higher, it is natural to feel worried when you first see the number. But there is no need to decide what it means by looking at the report alone. If you do not have clear symptoms of high blood sugar, your doctor may repeat the test or ask you to have another blood sugar test.

Research in Asian Indian adults has also looked at how well HbA1c can identify diabetes. One study found that HbA1c was useful for detecting diabetes in the people studied, although the level that worked best varied in that population (Mohan et al., 2010).

So, if you see 6.5% or more on your report, show it to your doctor and discuss it with them. They can look at your other blood sugar readings and health details before telling you what the result means. If you are still unsure about where your number stands, comparing it with the normal HbA1c range in India can help you see where your result fits.

What Is a Normal HbA1c Level in India?

The commonly used HbA1c categories in India are below 5.7% for normal, 5.7% to 6.4% for prediabetes and 6.5% or above for diabetes, consistent with widely used diagnostic criteria.

Research in Indian adults has also looked at these HbA1c levels. The CARRS study included people from Chennai and Delhi and used 5.7% to 6.4% for the prediabetes range and 6.5% or above for the diabetes range (Mohan et al., 2015).

If you are checking the HbA1c normal range in India, these values can help you see where your result falls. If your HbA1c is high and above the normal range, your doctor can check it along with your other blood sugar readings and health history before deciding what it means for you.

Does a Normal HbA1c Mean You Do Not Have Diabetes?

A normal HbA1c is reassuring, but one normal HbA1c result does not necessarily rule out every blood sugar problem.

Your HbA1c shows your average blood sugar over the past few months. A fasting blood sugar test, on the other hand, tells you what your blood sugar was at the time of that particular test. Because they look at blood sugar in different ways, the two results do not always fall into the same range.

For instance, your HbA1c may be normal while your fasting blood sugar comes back higher than expected. If this happens, your doctor may look at both results and consider your symptoms, health history and other risk factors before deciding whether you need further testing.

So, if you have been checking your blood sugar or have concerns about diabetes, looking at your fasting blood sugar test along with your HbA1c can give your doctor a clearer picture of your blood sugar levels.

Clinical Insight

“A normal HbA1c tells me what the patient’s blood sugar has looked like over the recent months. It does not tell me what their blood sugar will look like six months from now. If a person has a family history of diabetes or has had borderline readings in the past, I would pay attention to the trend in their reports over time. A normal result today is useful, but keeping track of changes is just as important.”

What Should You Do If Your HbA1c Is Not in the Normal Range?

If your HbA1c is above the normal range, do not worry about the number on the report alone. What matters is finding out why your blood sugar has gone up and what changes may help reduce HbA1c safely.

Your doctor may ask about your food habits, daily activity, sleep and medicines. They may also check your weight, waist size, blood pressure and other blood sugar tests to see what is happening with your health.

At Madhavbaug, our doctors look at these factors together and suggest care based on your needs. This may include personalised diet and lifestyle advice, Ayurvedic assessment and doctor-supervised Panchakarma therapies where appropriate. Your HbA1c and blood sugar can then be checked over time to see how you are progressing.

If your HbA1c has moved into the prediabetes or diabetes range, you can visit your nearest Madhavbaug clinic and discuss your report with a doctor. You can then understand what your number means and what you can do next.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the normal HbA1c level?
For most non-pregnant adults, an HbA1c below 5.7% is generally considered normal. A result of 5.7% to 6.4% is usually classified as prediabetes, while 6.5% or above is in the diabetes range when appropriately confirmed.

Is an HbA1c of 5.7% normal?
An HbA1c of 5.7% is at the beginning of the prediabetes range, not the normal range. If your result is 5.7%, discuss it with your doctor and consider your other blood sugar readings and health factors.

Is an HbA1c of 6% dangerous?
An HbA1c of 6% falls within the prediabetes range. It does not by itself mean that you have diabetes, but it indicates that your average blood sugar is higher than the normal range and deserves attention.

What is the HbA1c diabetes range?
An HbA1c of 6.5% or above is generally in the diabetes range. If you do not have clear symptoms of high blood sugar, your doctor may recommend repeat testing or another diagnostic test to confirm the result.

Does the normal HbA1c range change with age?
HbA1c tends to increase gradually with age even among people with normal glucose tolerance. However, the commonly used normal, prediabetes and diabetes categories are still important when interpreting HbA1c, alongside your age and overall health.

What is the normal HbA1c range in India?
The commonly used categories in India are below 5.7% for normal, 5.7% to 6.4% for prediabetes and 6.5% or above for diabetes. Research in Indian populations has also shown that HbA1c levels vary with age, so individual results should be interpreted in context.

Can you have diabetes with a normal HbA1c?
HbA1c is an important diabetes test, but no single test captures every aspect of blood sugar. If your symptoms or other blood sugar results suggest a problem despite a normal HbA1c, your doctor may recommend additional testing.

What should you do if your HbA1c is above the normal range?
Speak with your doctor about what the result means for you. Your doctor may consider your blood glucose readings, weight, diet, activity, medicines and other health factors before deciding what steps are appropriate.
